Gilbert Grace, ‘Cadastral Sutherland’ 2021, charcoal and blue chalk on Fabriano paper.

The artwork I entered is an enlargement of a photograph of the punt that would convey man, beast and machine across the Georges River between Tom Ugly’s Point, near side, and Horse Rock Point, far side.

To the left in the middle distance is the Sutherland Estate House, built by Thomas Holt and lost in a fire in the early 1900s.

Spending many hours peering into the photograph you find lost details including the house known as Gunyah, the oldest standing dwelling in the Sutherland Shire, part of the original Sutherland Estate.

The drawing was first shown in a solo exhibition focussing on the Great White Bird Trail, an active transport trail linking Kurnell, site of First Contact and Sydney Cove. The trail features references to the indigenous Gweagal, mariner James Cook and crew, entrepreneur Thomas Holt and artist Michael Kitching.
